Women Empowerment Programme (WEP)
Our Work
The Story
This is the flagship programme for Mrembo that provides counselling, mentorship, vocational education, job placement and asset transfer to young women who dropped out of education or completed basic education but lack job opportunities, and especially, those that have experienced sexual violence and working to rebuild their lives.
The Training Programme
This is a practical six months training program in Hairdressing and Beauty skills in particular: barbering; beauty and make-up; shampooing, conditioning and treatment; dreadlocks; braiding and weaving; natural hair styling; relaxing and perming; and salon management.
The WEP training program is targeted at young women in slums – in particular, victims of domestic violence, poverty, crime, drugs, prostitution, early marriage and refugees. We find these women through local churches that we have partnered with to identify those girls in most need of our services.
We transform the lives of these vulnerable women by improving their socio-economic status and equipping them with practical skills to restore their dignity.
Mrembo is a place where they can come and feel like they belong; it’s a place where they get the opportunity to focus on changing their lives; a place where they do not need to worry about acceptance regardless of whether life has dealt them a tough situation or because they are unique.
Women at Mrembo experience both spiritual and mental healing. The MEC training program has enabled young women to get stronger; gain independence and learn how to stand up for themselves.
By attending our training program, the young ladies get employment or start their own businesses which helps them to avoid teenage pregnancy, abortion, single parenthood, addiction, infection by STD’s and mental trauma. Our training also results in greater self-esteem for them and a positive attitude to life.
We are motivated, guided and driven by sustainable development goals; SDG 1: Ending Poverty, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 17: Partnerships for The Goals.
MEC has been awarded for being Africa’s Most Innovative organization changing the lives of refugees, domestic abuse survivors and single mothers through training and education. At Mrembo, young women learn that you can’t let the mistakes of your past determine your future.
We have active partnerships with salons and barber shops that offer practical training workshops, attachment and employment opportunities to prepare the students for the job market.
We have also partnered with Access Afya an organisation that provides quality, affordable healthcare for our students. We also have partnerships to provide family planning workshops and reproductive health training.
